If core OS components can be updated independently from iOS, it would allow older devices on unsupported versions of iOS to receive them.Īpple doesn’t have a “play services” system to put new features on iOS 10. Goes back to the incorrect framing of the argument. Which makes no sense, because most updates rely on new features that are part of iOS, such as SharePlay or whatever else. The secondary argument is that “if apple split off music from iOS, they could update it to run on old phones”. Google already does this with their versions of the apps. Maps and Screen Time could easily be decoupled from the OS and updated separately. The other side of this coin is that specific app vulnerabilities cannot be patched unless an iOS update is performed, like the iOS 15.7.3 update. Even the iOS 12.5.7 update that dropped was nothing more than a WebKit patch. The actual argument is about core system components like Safari only receiving updates as part of iOS updates. The framing of this argument is not accurate, as Apple Music is not a core iOS feature. The primary argument is “if apple split off music, it could update faster” which makes absolutely no sense, because updates happen every other month.
